Though it’s becoming increasingly popular to turn films into franchises – just ask the Fast & Furious crew – nothing has ever matched James Bond in this regard. Bond movies are like unique chapters in a never-ending page turner, and it never gets old looking back. You might dig “GoldenEye” out of your DVD drawer, or stumble on “Tomorrow Never Dies” browsing PictureBox films, and you’ll almost certainly be excited.
This is why any news related to a new Bond movie is always monumental, as was the case when it was recently announced that “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes will be returning for “Bond 24.” But the real nugget in this story was that the film is slated for a 2015 release – at which point Daniel Craig will be 47 or 48 years old. Craig will likely (and hopefully) linger at least for Bond 25, but the time has come to start the speculation on who could be the next 007. Here are 10 intriguing candidates.
10. Idris Elba (46 starting 2019)
Elba is a popular Internet rumor as many are calling for a black James Bond. Regardless of race, however, Elba will almost certainly be past 45 by the time they’re calling for a new Bond, and it’s a bit old to start off.
9. Guy Pearce (51 starting 2019)
Pearce, also a popular rumor, is 5 years older than Elba, and also a bit too sneering and mischievous for Bond.
8. Sam Worthington
Worthington is a better age if the franchise wants a Bond who will last 5 movies or more, but he’s a bit more heavy-breathing action hero and less dapper, tux-wearing martini sipper.
7. Clive Owen
Once upon a time, Owen would have been a very popular choice. But he’ll be past 50 when the time comes for a new 007, so we can probably cross him off the list.
6. John Hamm
An American Bond would certainly be different, but any “Mad Men” fan knows Hamm can pull off a nice suit. He’s the right blend of arrogant rebel and polished gentleman.
5. Benedict Cumberbatch
Cumberbatch is intriguing, but perhaps a bit too weird for Bond. He may have more of a future as a Bond villain.
4. Tom Hardy
Hardy would be a burly choice for Bond, but given the franchise’s direction with Craig – basically, making 007 tougher – Hardy could be a smooth continuation.
3. Christian Bale
Few doubt that Bale could be a flawless James Bond. The real question is whether he’d take on another character so iconic after finishing up as Batman.
2. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Known for his “Game Of Thrones” role as Jaime Lannister, Coster-Waldau is a bit of a wildcard, but if you’ve watched the show you could probably envision him as a fantastic Bond.
1. Michael Fassbender
Among all the rumors, Fassbender seems like the best fit. He seems to be that perfect combination of gentleman and badass that the Bond character embodies.
