Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead 2 to get mods?

One downside to the PC-style shooters on Microsoft's console is the fact that Microsoft themselves have clamped down the console so hard that user-created modifications to games is still just a dream. Playstation 3 users are able to take advantage of mods in their version of Unreal Tournament 3, while Xbox 360 owners are left in the dust and must rely on officially released content. Valve wants to help change this in their approach to Left 4 Dead 2, which would allow them to offer the user-created PC mods as Marketplace downloads for Xbox 360 users. If this model were to be paid (thanks to Microsoft forcing Valve to charge for any Left 4 Dead DLC), they would be giving profits directly back to the homebrewers. Speaking with OXM, Valve expresses their thoughts on this:

"One of the things I'm thinking about is how we work within that [Xbox Live] system, and one of the things I'd like to do is to allow these modules that are being released on PC to somehow integrate with Microsoft's system. We'll have to filter them, we can't allow any copyrighted materials, so it's going to have to go through a process. But we're hoping perhaps we can shepherd the really popular campaigns onto 360. And you know, if they are a paid system, perhaps that could go back to the authors. I think that would be a great story."

I would love this approach to providing console gamers with the latest and greatest content from the very active and creative mod community that have surrounded Valve games for years. Just think: Springfield, Illinois infested with Zombies. Homer, Marge, and the kids are the only ones left alive. Yea, I know it's awesome.

Agreed. That would be awesome. Games like this open doors. And they way their community is so diehard is astounding. This a great testament of how a Consumer/Company relationship should be handled.

I keep telling people about valve. They are a great company and very consistent when it comes to making great games.
