Sony Computer Entertainment secretly raised the price for servicing your Playstation 3 at the beginning of this week. Originally a $150 flat rate fee including shipping has gone up to $179. If you find the new price to fix your Playstation 3 outlandish, don’t fret. Sony is pushing to have the launch consoles replaced with the new 120 gb Playstation 3 Slim. All you have to do is pay $120 and lose your backward compatible console for the new and improved PS3 Slim.

God I hope I don’t get the YLOD. I have the original 60 gig, if Sony offered to give me $100 and a slim for my BC PS3 that can do Linux, thats a no. I love my PS3, and by ‘my’ I mean MY PS3. bg93(Quote)

I like how you say ’secretly’ like they were trying to hide it.
This isn’t the kind of announcement that they are going to make to the public, not only because of the price increase. But because it’s not that important.
But the BC PS3s are going to last forever. ben(Quote)

It’s not that it’s “not important,” as much as it’s the fact that they would rather not advertise it. They’re not trying to hide it, but they certainly don’t want to make a big fuss about it either.
I myself am very pissed off by these so-called “repair fees.” I’ve had 2 PS3’s die on me so far: the first one being in-warranty so I got it replaced free, and the second one was out-of-warranty, so Sony wanted to charge me $150 to fix it. This is freaking retarded; they expect me to pay them $150 for selling me a defective console, and I’m going to lose my hard drive contents and game saves either way (I didn’t back up my game saves prior to the YLOD occurring, so I was s*** out of luck). Complete B-S.
I just ended up getting a PS3 Slim instead since it just came out and I’d rather get a brand-new system than a refurbished replacement for $150. But the whole experience left me fuming. This is how a company treats its customers? Tony(Quote)

You could just go with the process of repairing a console without ever sending it in…by doing it till it says you need a credit card and just stop.. lol(Quote)

I’d rather go to a 3rd party to repair my ps3. Much much cheaper Khalid(Quote)

My 60g PS3 died about 3 months ago and I finally decided to fix it myself. So $30 bucks for a heat gun and thermal compound, and a few hours research online and my 60g runs as good and quiet as it did brand new. There is a really good YLOD repair guide pdf for free if you look for it. I did it and I had no prior experience working on computers. Screw them, $30 and a few hours effort and your system can be good as new. Look for the gilsky ylod repair guide on google. Save your personal data AND your money! BrentB.(Quote)

Why would you need your PS3 fixed anyway? Everyone knows it’s only the RROD box 360 that breaks all the time. PS3 and Wii are perfection it’s only 360 that breaks. Darkie(Quote)

I had to send my original 60 gb in 3 times. Each time I received it back it already had an issue. 1st one died with YLOD, $150 received the exchange back the HDMI didnt work. Sent it right back. Received the next, USB #2 didnt work…. Didnt feel like dealing with sending it in again so I dealt with it till my Router died and I had to plug in my Internet cable, Then I found out that the ether net plug didnt work but it was now past the 3 month warrenty… $150 more and I received another one… This one had a Fan so loud you could hardly hear your games (Sont claimed this was normal expaining the 3 fan levels and wouldnt exchange it!) 2 weeks after the 3 month warranty was up, Disc Drive died. Called Sony and they wanted $150 again and basically told me it would be smarter to go buy a new Slim because they are a better product and wont have as many issues. Moral of the story, you send in an old one expect a POS back… Troy Toombs(Quote)
