PS Vita Firmware Update 1.61 Live In US

Editors Note:

It seems that there was an error, 1.61 actually “will improve certain aspects of the system software.” Wow, sounds like last week’s PS3 update. Oh well, commence the “another useless update” comments.

Firmware Update 1.61 is now available for the PS Vita in the US, this update isn’t anything new for the Japanese, but if you own a US Vita then here’s what the update contains:

  • A new application, (Maps), has been added to the home screen.
  • In addition to photos, you can now take videos using the Photo application.
  • You can now publish stories about the products that you rate in PlayStation Store to Facebook.
  • In near, players’ information is now displayed on the Discoveries screen. On this screen, a list of the online IDs of up to 100 players that you have encountered, and the number of times that you encountered each player, are displayed. Tap an online ID to display that player’s profile screen.
  • The Mac OS version of Content Manager Assistant for PlayStation has been released. The Windows version has also been updated.
Not a bad list if I do say so myself, although we’ve already seen everything in action before, so it’s nothing surprising. I do find it interesting that the Vita can now track how many times you’ve encountered a certain person in Near, perhaps there will be games that utilize this feature in the future? Other than that, I suppose recording Videos is pretty cool, although the quality is ok at best, see for yourself down below.

To update your Vita, just connect it to your PS3, PC, Mac, or update from the Vita itself with wi-fi.
