The first Map Pack for Call Of Duty: Black Ops II is out today on the Xbox 360, and it is called the Revolution Map Pack. Armed with four new multiplayer maps, one new zombie mode map and a new gun, the map pack offers a variety of different atmospheres that really stand out well when compared to the catalog of previous maps released across the board on all games. I’ve had a chance to sit down and play through them all, and here you will find the my thoughts on each map, as well as a video walkthrough. When I do the walkthroughs, I do them solo so that I can explore every nook and cranny of the map without worrying about pesky campers laying wait to pwn me.
On a side note, I also used the new Peacekeeper SMG during three of the maps, and I have to say, it looks like it will be a go-to gun for most people. Scoped in, there is next to zero recoil and with extended mags, it has a 40 bullet clip. Very smooth and powerful weapon. I would expect it to work out that way since Treyarch would seem likely to reward people for buying the content. I have no doubt the complaints of it being over-powered are sure to follow.
The Revolution Map Pack is available now on Xbox 360 for 1200 MP ($15). It should be available on the Playstation 3, Wii U and PC after the one month exclusivity period in late February, though an official release date has yet to be announced.
Downhill: This map looks like it is right out of the X-Games on ESPN. A wintery, medium sized map located in the middle of a ski resort, this map is actually pretty cool. There are moving ski lifts that will kill you if you aren’t paying attention. There is also a snowman in front of one of the office type buildings on the map. It’s too bad you can’t fully blow him up. That would just be too cool.
Mirage: This map reminds me of Spec Ops: The Line, as it takes place in a desert resort town in the Gobi Desert of China. It’s probably my least favorite map of the four, if only for the fact that desert environments are naturally drab and boring. There doesn’t seem to be much imagination to the structure of the map, as both this map and grind focus on walkways revolving around one big, central structure. In the case of Mirage, that structure is what seems to be a hotel lobby area. There are some vehicles parked outside on one side of the map, which create for obvious explosion hazards, as I found out.
Hydro: This map takes place at a hydroelectric dam in Pakistan. There are a few areas with running water that lead to a huge drop off of the dam where you can die if you jump off. I think it would have been really cool if there was a current to the water and it slowed you down when walking or if it could potentially sweep you away off the map. Definitely a missed opportunity to make players cautious of their environment with this map.
Grind: ESPN could have gotten a lot of shine for the X-Games if they worked some cross marketing in here, as this map takes place at a skate park during an X-Gamesy type of event in Venice, California. There are a bunch of half pipes and tubes that you can climb and explore, with a big store area in the middle. This map seems to be smaller than most, but is definitely not small on the level of Nuketown. Cool vibe, though.
Die Rise (Zombies): I am not a zombie player, so I did my best here. From what I can tell, this map is going to be very different from everything else in the zombie catalog, as it focuses on moving up and down through a very enclosed building instead of being able to travel everywhere on a horizontal plane. Finding where to unlock extra areas and new weapons doesn’t seem as easy as it has on other maps, but that might be because the other people I was playing with seemed to open so many before me. Because everything is so enclosed, it can be tough to recover if you get stuck with a massive pack of zombies following you. We made it to round 8 my first time through, and we could have gone farther if I didn’t go down for the first time in round 7 and found myself stuck with a pistol and nowhere to get a new gun. Oh well. I didn’t get to see how you play as a zombie. Not quite sure how that happens, yet.
